ISLAMIC AL-JUMUAA REMINDER AND LEGACY GROUP, (http://aljumaareminder.com/), if you are a scholar which side suits you best:

HOW DO SCHOLARS RELATE TO THE DONKEY AND THE DOG

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When you hear the crowing of cocks, ask for Allah’s Blessings for (their crowing indicates that) they have seen an angel. And when you hear the braying of donkeys, seek Refuge with Allah from Satan for (their braying indicates) that they have seen a Satan.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 3303]

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When you hear the barking of dogs and the braying of asses at night, seek refuge in Allah, for they see which you do not see. [Sunan Abi Dawud 5103] [Sahih (Al-Albani)]

Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “When you hear a dog barking or a donkey braying in the night, seek refuge with Allah. They see what you do not see. Shut the doors and mention the Name of Allah over them. Shaytan will not open a door which has been shut and had the name of Allah mentioned over it. Then cover the pots, tie the water-skins and cover the vessels.” [Al-Adab Al-Mufrad – Book 51, Hadith 1234][ Sahih (Al-Albani)]

After reading all these hadiths we can come to the conclusion that dogs and donkeys have access to the unseen which is in this case is being the ability to see a Satan; if these two animals, the dog and the donkey, see the Satan they let us know via barking and braying respectively so that we can seek refuge in Allah from Satan.

The dogs and donkeys are like scholars, right? The scholars have access to the unseen (Qur’an and Sunnah) that was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by Allah’s Permission.

Say (O Muhammad ()): “I know not whether (the punishment) which you are promised is near or whether my Lord will appoint for it a distant term. (Qur’an 72:25)

“(He (Allah) Alone) the All-Knower of the Gha’ib (unseen), and He reveals to none His Gha’ib (unseen).” (Qur’an 72:26)

Except to a Messenger (from mankind) whom He has chosen (He informs him of unseen as much as He likes), and then He makes a band of watching guards (angels) to march before him and behind him. (Qur’an 72:27)

[He (Allah) protects them (the Messengers)], till He sees that they (the Messengers) have conveyed the Messages of their Lord (Allah). And He (Allah) surrounds all that which is with them, and He (Allah) keeps count of all things (i.e. He knows the exact number of everything). (Qur’an 72:28)

Now that the Message (the Qur’an and Sunnah) has been conveyed to the Scholars they should know how the Satans work and if they should spot any of his evil works they should let mankind know so that they can seek refuge with Allah from Satan. Remember in our 146th article where in the beginning we explained how the Qur’an and Sunnah are lights which enable one to see since light enables us to see. Without light we can’t see.  For further details of how the Qur’an and Sunnah is light please read the beginning of our 146th article from; http://aljumaareminder.com/reminder/146-iarlg-conclusion-try-not-to-be-fooled-by-gog-and-magog-and-stay-alert-date-9th-december-2016-9th-or-10th-rabi-awwal-1438/

Now you might have noticed that we recommended that the scholars should be like the donkey and dog by informing mankind about the plots of Satan. It is also interesting that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also mentioned that these barkings and brayings normally happen at night which kind of implies that scholars should be active especially in dark (ignorant) times to warn mankind. There is another angle which we have to compare the scholars with how they should not be like dogs and donkeys.

And recite to them the story of him to whom We gave Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), but he threw them away, so Shaitan (Satan) followed him up, and he became of those who went astray. And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith but he clung to the earth and followed his own vain desire. So his description is the description of a dog: if you drive him away, he lolls his tongue out, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls his tongue out. Such is the description of the people who deny/reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). So relate the stories, perhaps they may reflect. (Qur’an 7:175-176)

The likeness of those who were entrusted with the (obligation of the) Taurat (Torah) (i.e. to obey its commandments and to practise its legal laws), but who subsequently failed in those (obligations), is as the likeness of a donkey who carries huge burdens of books (but understands nothing from them). How bad is the example (or the likeness) of people who deny/reject the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah. And Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, disbelievers, etc.). (Qur’an 62:5)

Keep in mind that since dogs and donkeys still have access to the unseen as discussed above; we can still say that Scholars who have been given the Message (the Qur’an and Sunnah) from the Unseen are being warned in (Qur’an 7:175-176) and (Qur’an 62:5).

Let us look at the following table:

PARABLE OF A DOG: (QUR’AN 7:175-176) PARABLE OF A DONKEY: (QUR’AN 62:5)
Assuming dogs can talk; let us look at the following conversation:

Scholar 1: (I had the Ayat of Allah…but so many things happened and I found a new path; yes a new path of being astray. I can’t let people know that I have left Islam even if my actions will show that I have left Islam I should at least continue saying that I didn’t. I feel that I am astray but it’s fine. I am a hypocrite).

Scholar 2: I used to be Muslim and now I am on XYZ religion. I learned all that I could and I will tell you that being Muslim is no good. Yes the astray religion of XYZ is the best. I am a disbeliever.

Dog: Hey humans, you are weird! You had the dignity of being elevated but you chose the low life. I sometimes loll my tongue out and sometimes I don’t. We dogs can’t sweat through our skins to cool off like you humans but we sweat through our paw pads but it’s by panting that we dogs circulate the necessary air through our bodies to cool down. You two scholars actually have to loll out your tongues full time and you are okay with it?!? Why don’t you return to Islam instead of being a hypocrite and a disbeliever? Or is it because Satan followed you up? You shouldn’t have thrown away the Ayat of Allah.

Assuming donkeys can talk let us look at the following conversation:

Scholar: I have knowledge

Donkey: Hey human, I have knowledge too. You are like me, you have all that knowledge just like I have carried it and neither of us benefits from the knowledge

Scholar: I simply don’t apply the knowledge I have

Donkey: So do I. The only difference between the knowledge I have and the knowledge you have is that I have to carry them as books but you have them in your memory via memorization. Since they don’t benefit us; they are burdens to us all. We are similar in that we carry what we don’t use. Though I do feel sorry for you; you should actually benefit from that knowledge but you are acting like us donkeys.

We can be sure here that the scholars are denying/rejecting the Ayat of Allah We can be sure here that the scholars are denying/rejecting the Ayat of Allah

Now that we have seen both angles of how the scholars should and should not relate to the donkey and the dog. We who are not scholars should therefore try our best to ensure we choose a good scholar. It won’t be easy, because you yourself have to put in work on understanding the Qur’an and Sunnah. A popular scholar does not necessarily mean that he is the best scholar. In Surah Ta-Ha we see how popular As-Samiry got when Musa left to meet Allah for 40 days; As-Samiry was corrupt but was still approved by many people yet there was a more qualified scholar (Harun) there.  Harun was right there and we know that he was an eloquent speaker and a true scholar (a Prophet to be more precise) but people still left him and went to the liar.

Remember to ease your task of finding a good scholar; analyze them with the Qur’an and Sunnah; if they adhere to them then they are okay. Are such scholars introducing and/or following innovations? Innovations are no good. How well do such scholars do it fitnas? If they fare well, it means there is a high percentage they are okay. And Allah Knows Best.
