MAGICIANS – Part 7 – Performance Magicians (4 out of ?)

This week’s topic will be covered in two pages to ensure that the lesson is understood in one go. This is due to the complexity of the topic which we believe is best to cover under one go for it to be beneficial.

What is teleportation? It is the transfer of matter or energy from one point to another without traversing the physical space between them.

Verily, he (Satan) and Qabiluhu (his soldiers from the jinns or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them….(Qur’an 7:27)

Magicians can sometimes make it appear as if they are bringing out something from nothing through the help of their friends (the jinns). This can be explained very easily. From (Qur’an 7:27) above we note that there are two realms [one for mankind and another for jinns.] The jinns from their realm can see us while we can’t see them and from our previous articles we have shown that they can come into our (man’s) realm in a form of a person, snake or even dog though they are bound by the limitations of that form. For example when they come into our realm in a form of a snake and they are hit by a car then they will die.

Keep all this in mind as we examine the magician below bringing out a long piece of baked bread from his other hand which contained only very small amount of uncooked flour. It is as if he is bringing it out of nothing because that long baked bread could not have come out of that little material of uncooked bread.

It is quite clear that the magician had the jinn take the uncooked flour to another location (unknown) and the jinn brought a long baked bread which the magician pulled slowly from the realm of the jinns to our (man’s) realm. We don’t know if they are forced to take things in man’s realm into their realm (jinn’s) and back to our realm (man’s) very fast due to limitations. We hope the image below can clarify what we believe is going on.

It is highly unlikely that the jinns can store the things from man’s realm to their realm for long periods of times ready for action. Since magicians and jinns know what they are going to do, they must have preparations ready before a performance. When you go and see their performance you are seeing what they have already planned. Get it? Some things they can do easily anytime such as levitating objects but if they plan to pull a baked bread like the one above and you tell them to pull anything else instead and they (magician and jinn(s)) are not prepared, they will most likely fail unless that jinn knows another place of getting the newly requested item they have not prepared. Know that the magician and his jinn(s) partners can communicate with each other without you knowing that they are communicating which will be explained in the future.

Sources that show how fast jinns are & their ability of teleportation/transportation:

Allah has given the jinn powers that he has not given to humans. Allah has told us about some of their powers, such as the ability to move and travel quickly. An ‘ifreet from among the jinn guaranteed to the Prophet Sulaymaan (peace be upon him) that he would bring the throne of the Queen of Yemen to Jerusalem in a moment faster than that needed for a man to get up from where he was sitting. Keep in mind that the hoopoe said in (Qur’an 27:23) that she has a great throne which shows that it must have been pretty heavy. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

He (Sulaiman) said: “O chiefs! Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me surrendering themselves in obedience?” An Ifrit (strong) from the jinns said: “I will bring it to you before you rise from your place. And verily, I am indeed strong and trustworthy for such work.” (Qur’an 27:38-39)

The following hadith shows how fast they can run back and forth. They hear the Adhan and they run away at a distance of 36 miles then come back to annoy the person who is praying: Abu Sufyan reported it on the authority of Jabir that he had heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: When Satan hears the call to prayer, he runs away to a distance like that of Rauha. Sulaimin said: I asked him about Rauha. He replied: It is at a distance of thirty-six miles from Medina. [Sahih Muslim 388 a]

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “When the call for prayer is made, Satan takes to his heels passing wind so that he may not hear the Adhan and when the call is finished he comes back, and when the Iqama is pronounced, Satan again takes to his heels, and when the Iqama is finished he comes back again and tries to interfere with the person and his thoughts and say, “Remember this and that (which he has not thought of before the prayer)”,…. [Sahih al-Bukhari 1231]

The limits of the jinn in relation to their might:

Before we explore other Ayats which shows the limits of the jinns, let us pounder on what the jinn said in (Qur’an 27:39) above. He had to remove the doubt of Prophet Sulaiman by saying “Verily”. He said, “Verily I am indeed strong and trustworthy for such work.” Why did he have to convince Sulaiman that he is strong to bring the throne? Allah is showing us a lot of things with just this one Ayat.

  • First is that this is (one of) the strongest type of jinn and Allah affirms that.
  • Secondly to carry the great throne would need extreme strength which jinns don’t normally have except for the Ifrits (the strongest of the jinns). Since the Ifrit had to convince Sulaiman that he is strong means that this is the maximum a jinn can carry, transport and move about with.
  • A point to reflect on: If a magician is acting as if he is levitating something heavier than the great throne of the queen of Sheba, then know that the magician is being assisted by more than one jinn since no one jinn can lift something heavier than the great throne of the queen of Sheba.

(For people in Hell) In addition there will be maces of iron (to punish) them. (Qur’an 22:21)

The Prophet (SAW) states the following for the phrase, ‘maces of iron’ mentioned in (Qur’an 22:21): “If a mace of iron were sent to earth and if all people and jinn came together to lift it, they would not be able to lift it.”.& “If a mountain were hit by a mace of iron, the mountain would be broken into pieces.” [Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal / Ibn Kathir]

The strength of all people and jinn combined cannot even lift a mace of iron in Hell created by Allah. But who will be able to use such a mace of iron? Most likely the only creation of Allah capable of using such a mace of iron would be the angels. And that is why the angels are the guardians and keepers of Hell.

And the angels will be on its sides, and eight angels will, that Day, bear the Throne of your Lord above them. (Qur’an 69:17)

Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers….(Qur’an 74:30-31)

(Qur’an 69:17) and (Qur’an 74:30-31) on the other hand highlights the strength of the angels which gives us a clue as to why Satan (a jinn) was scared of the angels when he saw them in the battle of Badr. But he did not attribute his fear to them but to Allah because the Creator of such strong beings is the one to be feared.

And (remember) when Satan made their (evil) deeds seem fair to them and said, “No one of mankind can overcome you this Day (of the battle of Badr) and verily, I am your neighbor (for each and every help).” But when the two forces came in sight of each other, he ran away and said “Verily, I have nothing to do with you. Verily! I see what you see not. Verily! I fear Allah for Allah is Severe in punishment.” (Qur’an 8:48)

Notice in (Qur’an 8:48) that Satan only promises them that they will succeed over mankind just because the disbelievers numbers was 1000 compared to the believers number of 313 in the battle of Badr. Satan being a jinn and being weaker than angels would never dare to take them on.

The angels have no free will and do all that Allah commands them to do. This is an important fact to realize because the evil jinns do a lot of things which are blasphemous but angels don’t do anything to the jinns and us unless they are commanded by Allah. The evil jinns refer to themselves as fallen angels, work with magicians and so on.

We humans have angels assigned to us, whose only job is to write our deeds. They do just that. These angels have been appointed to watch, listen and record.

(Remember!) that the two receivers (recording angels) receive (each human being after he or she has attained the age of puberty), one sitting on the right and one on the left (to note his or her actions). Not a word does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it). (Qur’an 50:17-18)

But verily, over you (appointed angels in charge of mankind) to watch you. Kiraman (honourable) Katibin writing down (your deeds). They know all that you do. (Qur’an 82:10-12)

In fact we have angels who are assigned to protect us not through their own will but they guard a person by the Command of Allah. Do you realize what this means? If for example you are hit by a person and the angels didn’t protect you, it simply means that Allah decreed that you get hit as a trial or recompense and the angels only guard by the Command of Allah. They will only help you if Allah Commands them to help you.

For each (person), there are angels in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the Command of Allah….. (Qur’an 13:11)

And we (angels) descend not except by the Command of your Lord (O Muhammad SAW). To Him belongs what is before us and what is behind us, and what is between these two, and your Lord is never forgetful, (Qur’an 19:64)

All this information is to show the weakness of the jinns. All jinns know that they have to face Allah in the Day of Judgement but many will sin and not repent.

And they have invented a kinship between Him and the jinns, but the jinns know well that they have indeed to appear (before Him) (i.e. they will be brought for accounts). (Qur’an 37:158)

Therefore realize that the evil jinns will continue sinning even if the angels are there. Just like how some humans know that doing certain sins are bad and know Allah but still continue to sin.

Now let us conclude; jinns are not all mighty as they are made to appear. They have many other weaknesses which we will explore in our future articles. People hear about jinns flying or diving in the sea and they become frightened. But when they hear about birds or butterflies flying people don’t become frightened. When people hear about fish swimming they don’t become frightened. Once you learn about jinns from the Quran and Sunnah you will realize that there is no need to fear them. You just have to ask Allah for protection according to what Prophet Muhammad (SAW) passed on to us by the Permission of Allah.

We took our time to show you the weaknesses of the jinn and to remind you that the angels are mightier than the jinns and Allah who created the angels is the Mightiest. Now the jinns and the magicians who work together are just enjoying short term benefits but they will regret it very much in the Day of Judgement.

And on the Day when He will gather them (all) together (and say): “O you assembly of jinns! Many did you mislead of men,” and their Auliya’ (friends and helpers, etc) amongst men will say: “Our Lord! We benefited one from the other, but now we have reached our appointed term which You did appoint for us.” He will say: “The Fire be your dwelling-place, you will dwell therein forever, except as Allah may will. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.” (Qur’an 6:128)

One might ask, “Since we can never see the jinns in their actual forms but humans can be transported from one location to another via the jinn’s realm; does that mean it is possible for a human to see the jinn’s realm for even a moment?” That is a good question since answering it will uncover a lot of what we don’t know from the jinn’s realm.

But in order for this question to be answered we need a lot of Ayats from the Quran and a lot of authentic Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). These are the two sources which we will use to answer the above question in a future article.

Next week we will In Shaa Allah look at a case study of a magician so that we can analyze it with what we have learned so far.
