ISLAMIC AL-JUMUAA REMINDER AND LEGACY GROUP (http://aljumaareminder.com/) reminds via an extract of the following lecture:

SELL THIS DUNYA AND IT WILL COME TO YOU HUMILIATED by Sheikh Omar Abdelkafy;

There was a sheikh who was a student of another sheikh. The student (who became a sheikh) was a famous cleric in Levant. His teacher was Iraqi.

The Levantine sheikh had a smart and pious student. Once, his student said, “I will go to Baghdad.” The sheikh said, “As long as you’ll go there. Pass by my teacher, kiss his hand and head, and say to him: ‘This is your student’s kiss’ and ask him to make dua’ for me.” The Levantine sheikh just wanted a dua’.

So the student went to Baghdad and asked about this Iraqi sheikh. When he reached his house, he found a wall of palace; a big palace! He said, “No, I want sheikh (Abu….)” They replied, “He is that” He said, “No, I just want the jurist cleric”. They replied, “He is the jurist cleric (Abu…)”. He said, “Okay.”

They brought him to a big hall, fed and honored him. They brought food, drink and perfume. After a few minutes the sheikh arrived. He was a bearded man wearing clean clothes and had a good odor. By seeing this, the student doubted because we always think that the sheikh must be a beggar otherwise we won’t follow his advisory opinion.

The surprised student decided to deliver his teacher’s message only. His Levantine teacher was poor living in a house with two rooms. One of them was for his kids and the other was for where he welcomes guests; and his clothes were obsolete.

The student kissed his hand and head and said, “My teacher delivers salutation to you.” He asked, “How is he?” The student replied, “He asks you for dua’.”

He said, “O Allah, remove Dunya’s love from his heart.”

The student was mixed up as you now! Dunya! My teacher doesn’t know the meaning of Dunya you’re talking about. Then the student went back to Levant.

After a few months, he visited his teacher. The teacher asked: “Have you gone to Baghdad?” He replied, “Yes.”

He asked, “Did you visit my sheikh?”

-Yes

The student wasn’t convinced of what happened in Baghdad. He asked, “Did he make dua’ for me?”  The student was embarrassed to tell his teacher the dua’. He replied, “Yes he made dua’ for you.”

He asked, “What was the dua’?”

-He hoped the good for you

He said, “By Allah, tell me what he exactly said.”

-He asked Allah to remove Dunya’s love from your heart.

The student was embarrassed. So the sheikh cried and said, “May Allah bless our Baghdadi teacher. Allah removed Dunya from his heart. So it has been put in his hands. But we instilled Dunya in our hearts. So it was taken from our hands.

It was narrated that Anas [radi Allaahu anhu] said that the Prophet [sallal laahu alaihi wa sallam] said: Whoever is mainly concerned about the Hereafter, Allah will make him feel independent of others and will make him focused and content, and his worldly affairs will fall into place. But whoever is mainly concerned with this world, Allah will make him feel in constant need of others and will make him distracted and unfocused, and he will get nothing of this world except what is decreed for him. (narrated by al-Tirmidhi)

Nay, you prefer the life of this world, although the Hereafter is better and more lasting. Verily this is in the former Scriptures – the Scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa. (Qur’an 87: 16-19)

And this life of the world is only amusement and play! Verily, the home of the Hereafter – that is the life indeed, if they but knew. (Qur’an 29:64)

And indeed the Hereafter is better for you than the present (life of this world). (Qur’an 93:4)

NB: It is okay to ask for Dunya too. But Dunya should not be in your heart, only in your hands. You should not prefer this life over the Hereafter. If you prefer this life instead of the Hereafter you will necessarily disregard some commands of Allah which is very dangerous.

But of mankind there are some who say: “Our Lord! Give us (Your Bounties) in this world!” and for such there will be no portion in the Hereafter. And of them there are some who say: “Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!” Those for them there will be allotted a share for what they have earned. And Allah is Swift at reckoning. (Qur’an 2:200-202)

Whoever disbelieved in Allah after his belief, except him who is forced thereto and whose heart is at rest with Faith but such as open their breasts to disbelief, on them is wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a great torment. That is because they loved and preferred the life of this world over that of the Hereafter. And Allah guides not the people who disbelieve. (Qur’an 16: 106-107)

Those who prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah and seek crookedness therein – they are far astray. (Qur’an 143)

And among mankind is he who worships Allah as it were, upon the edge (i.e. in doubt): if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts to disbelief after embracing Islam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss. (Qur’an 22:11)

Verily, these (disbelievers) love the present life of this world, and put behind them a heavy Day. (that will be hard). (Qur’an 76:27)
